Grilled Portabella Mushroom Recipe

These days both are being sold at a variety of different names such as portabella, crimini, champignon, Italian brown mushrooms and even baby bellas.

They are all the same mushroom.

Grilled Portabella Mushroom Recipe

The grilled portabella mushroom is often used as a vegetarian burger because of their very meaty texture.

Placed between a toasted bun, vegetarians (or non-vegetarians) can enjoy a great “burger” that is low calorie and yummy too!

This recipe for grilled portabella mushrooms can be used as a vegetarian main dish, for veggie burgers or for a side dish with a big steak.

4 large portabello mushroom caps
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 Tbs basil-minced
1 Tbs oregano-minced
1 garlic clove-pressed
salt and pepper to taste

  1. Whisk together vinegar, oil, basil, oregano, garlic, salt, and pepper.
  2. Pour over the mushrooms. Let stand at room temperature for 15 minutes or so.
  3. Preheat grill for medium-high heat.
  4. Place mushrooms on the grill, reserving marinade for basting.
  5. Grill for 5 to 8 minutes on each side, or until tender. Brush with marinade frequently.
  6. Optional: Top with cheese during the last 2 minutes of grilling.

This is a great recipe for those looking for low fat or vegetarian burgers. Place it on a rice bun or a corn tortilla and it is a gluten free meal too!
